Toys R Us to Open 120 New US Stores

Toys R Us is launching a major expansion with 120 new stand-alone stores across the United States in time for the holiday season, the company announced in a press release.
This move, in partnership with Go Retail Group, will increase the toy retailer’s stand-alone presence to 160 locations. The collaboration with Go Retail Group will also bring new design elements to each location, aiming to draw families and collectors alike.
“This is a major moment for Toys R Us as we significantly expand our presence across the United States,” said Jamie Uitdenhowen, executive vice president of Toys R Us at WHP Global.
The new stores will feature a curated selection of toys, collectibles, and gifts from brands like Lego, Barbie, Pokémon and K-Pop Demon Hunters.

This expansion builds on a smaller push last year, when the chain opened over 30 stores, including flagships and seasonal holiday shops. Beyond stand-alone locations, the retailer has a presence in Macy’s stores nationwide and operates shop-in-shop concepts at airports and with the Navy Exchange Service Command. These shop-in-shop sites allow the retailer to reach travelers and service members, expanding brand visibility beyond traditional malls.
The retailer opened a shop-in-shop location at Orlando International Airport in August, with another set to open next summer.
The retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017 after a 20-year decline. By 2018, it had liquidated all U.S. operations but later reemerged as Tru Kids. In 2021, Tru Kids sold a controlling stake to brand-management specialist WHP Global, which also owns Express, Marc Jacobs, Bonobos and Anne Klein.
