Worldline CEO discusses leadership approach

With two decades of experience in the payments and technology sector, Lee Jones, CEO of Worldline Merchant Services UK, recently discussed his career-defining leadership lessons and Worldline’s UK customer-focused strategy in an interview, highlighting his journey and the importance of relationships in shaping his approach.
Jones’ career journey was shaped by his early experiences outside of big corporates. After finishing university, he spent time thinking about what he was naturally good at and what he enjoyed, which led him to join his family business. This experience gave him a grounding in working closely with people and building relationships.
He later moved into larger organisations, including Kyocera and Ingenico, which brought different experiences and perspectives. One of the biggest lessons he learned was the importance of staying true to himself as he progressed through his career. Jones believes that leadership is about creating an environment where people can be themselves and do their best work.
Leadership Approach
At Worldline, Jones has continued to strengthen the company’s presence in the UK through investment, local capability, and regulatory alignment. The key principles behind his leadership approach include being inclusive, collaborative, and recognising that the company succeeds as a team. He also believes in staying close to the detail and understanding what teams are experiencing.
Worldline’s UK Strategy Unfolds
Worldline’s new CEO has established a clear vision to become the European payments partner of choice for merchants and financial institutions. In the UK, Jones took an inclusive approach to defining the company’s strategy, asking colleagues what they believed Worldline could be world-class at and what mattered most to them. The result was becoming the “UK’s leading customer-centric payments partner, simplifying every transaction through robust, resilient and trusted services.”
Jones notes that trust is everything in payments, and it is created through many small actions, such as keeping promises and delivering what is promised. Following Brexit, Worldline made the decision to continue investing in the UK, building a new regulated business and securing its FCA licence. This journey was challenging but rewarding, and it helped build strong relationships internally and externally.
As the payments sector continues to evolve, Jones sees consumer expectations changing, with a growing focus on customer experience, convenience, and trust. He believes that alternative payment methods, digital wallets, and account-to-account payments will continue to evolve, and data will play a huge role in creating value for retailers and consumers.
Worldline is involved in initiatives such as Wero, which aims to make payments across Europe simpler and more seamless. Jones also notes that AI will accelerate innovation, but it must solve real problems and make someone’s life better. Looking ahead, he sees trust and convenience becoming increasingly important, with developments such as Worldline Tap on Mobile allowing everyday devices to become payment-enabled.
Future of Payments Evolves
Another major development is agentic commerce, which represents a different way of shopping. Instead of customers searching and comparing products themselves, they could tell an AI agent what they want and allow it to find options. However, there are still many challenges to solve, particularly around security, fulfilment, and how retailers adapt their systems.
Jones has always tried to keep learning, whether through conversations, podcasts, or spending time understanding how customers operate. He believes that relationships matter and that a company’s reputation, integrity, and treatment of people are what last throughout its career.
Worldline’s approach to innovation is focused on solving real problems and making a positive impact on customers’ lives. By prioritising trust, convenience, and customer experience, the company is well-positioned to succeed in the rapidly evolving payments environment. As Jones notes, the future of payments is about serving customers in the way they want to be served, and Worldline is committed to making that a reality. The company’s investment in the UK and its commitment to regulatory alignment have laid a strong foundation for its continued growth and success.
The development of agentic commerce is a significant area of focus for Worldline, with the company working alongside partners such as Mastercard and ING Bank to enable this new way of shopping.
