FedEx Shopify App Aims to Eliminate Surprise Import Fees - import fees
Available for $99 a month, the app is part of FedEx’s new Global Trade Navigator suite.

FedEx has launched a Shopify app to help merchants show customers a duty and tax guarantee at checkout. The tool, called FedEx Duty and Tax, aims to prevent surprise import charges that often frustrate shoppers. This initiative is part of FedEx’s broader strategy to enhance the customer experience by reducing friction in cross-border transactions, as highlighted in their recent news release.

Available for $99 a month, the app is part of FedEx’s new Global Trade Navigator suite. It covers any overages in duties and taxes, though no refunds are issued if the actual costs are lower. The amount charged includes a service fee, which is clearly outlined on the app’s Shopify page.

Addressing a Common Pain Point

According to FedEx, 68% of small and medium-sized businesses see customers surprised by additional duties, taxes, or fees upon delivery at least some of the time. This statistic comes from an April poll conducted as part of the 2026 FedEx Small Business Trade Index. The app seeks to address this issue by providing cost transparency at checkout, a feature also offered by competitors like UPS and Zonos. UPS’s Global Checkout service, launched last year, and Zonos’s Duty and Tax app are notable examples of similar solutions in the market.

Jason Brenner, FedEx’s senior vice president of digital portfolio, stated the app is “at parity or better” in terms of transparency compared to rivals. He emphasized that the tool is designed to improve the recipient experience by minimizing unexpected costs. Brenner hinted at future expansions beyond Shopify, though specifics were not provided.

A Broader Suite of Tools

The Global Trade Navigator suite includes additional tools to simplify international shipping. The FedEx Trade Planner helps businesses estimate duties, taxes, and fees by allowing them to input product descriptions, URLs, or images to find relevant Harmonized System codes. This feature streamlines the preparation of customs documents and ensures compliance with international regulations. Additionally, new features in FedEx Ship Manager enable detailed customs reviews, including Harmonized System code classifications, customs values, and country of manufacture details.

For developers, Global Trade APIs offer functionalities like Harmonized System code lookups, duty and tax estimations, and regulatory compliance sourcing. These APIs are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing workflows, catering to both small businesses venturing into international shipping and large enterprises looking to optimize their trade operations.

Making International Shipping Simpler

FedEx has been testing these capabilities with a small percentage of customers before the official launch, ensuring that the tools meet real-world needs. Brenner emphasized that the goal is to make international shipping as straightforward as domestic shipping, a sentiment that has reportedly resonated with users. The suite’s reception has been positive, with many shippers expressing appreciation for the simplification of international logistics.
